TAEC HERITAGE SILKS
Our Heritage Silks collection represents one of the most enduring textile traditions of Laos, created by master weavers of the Tai Daeng communities in the highlands of Houaphan Province. Each textile is not simply an object of beauty, but a living expression of identity, spirituality, and intergenerational knowledge. For centuries, Tai Daeng women have raised silkworms, prepared natural dyes from forest botanicals and lac, and woven intricate supplementary weft and ikat designs on floor looms, embedding stories and cosmology directly into cloth. As factory-spun silk and synthetic dyes become increasingly common, the commitment of our artisans to natural silk and labour-intensive weaving techniques is both intentional and essential. By working directly with these master artisans, we help sustain the knowledge, economic independence, and cultural vitality embedded within every thread.
Each silk has emerged from a lineage of skill carried forward through generations of women. Mythical serpents, ancestral spirits, scenes of almsgiving, music, harvest, and village life appear through raised patterning that can take months to complete. They are cultural manuscripts, shaped by animist and Buddhist cosmologies and guided by pattern templates preserved and reinterpreted across generations. No two works are identical; each reflects the weaver’s hand, eye, and choice of colour.
We invite you to experience Lao silk as living heritage — and to support the artisans who ensure these remarkable traditions continue into the future.
