Celebrate cultural diversity with a souvenir TAEC t-shirt from Laos!

Our branded t-shirt features a taleo. A taleo is a woven bamboo talisman thought to bring protection and good luck. Taleo are used by many ethnic groups here in Laos, however, it is culturally rooted in the Kmhmu tradition, the largest minority ethnic group in the country.

Typically, a bamboo taleo is placed above the door of a home, the edge of a rice field, or entrance to a village to guard from unwanted visitors - human or supernatural. Some taleo are accompanied by a branch of a thorny tree (the sharp spikes offer further protection) and a short blessing in Pali, the sacred language of Theravada Buddhism.

Our t-shirts make a great gift and are a wonderful reminder of what makes Laos so special.

These striking masks are made by Ta Oy men and women in Champassak Province. Wooden masks and statues were traditionally used to represent ancestors and spirits, and would adorn their community houses. However, nowadays they are primarily used for decoration and sale to generate income for local families. TAEC has been working with this community since 2010.

The design of the mask is first roughly chiselled into wood and then the entire piece is charred in a fire. The burnt wood is scrubbed off with a natural brush made from a dried coconut shell and polished with clear wax.
