The Tai Lue people of Laos have been making indigo dye for centuries. The dye is made from the Indigofera tinctoria plant, which is grown in the mountains of Laos. The leaves of the plant are crushed and fermented to produce a deep blue dye. Tai Lue women have a special relationship with their dye pots, and they take great pride in caring for them.

In keeping with all things natural, Tai Lue cotton is harvested and processed by hand making it ultra soft and luxurious. These large cotton textiles can be used as a shawl, throw, or a runner.

Tai Daeng women raise their own silkworms for the costly and delicate hand-reeled silk woven into their ornate textiles such as these shoulder scarves or pha bieng worn during formal Buddhist ceremonies. They can also be hung as gorgeous wall art or used as decorative bed or table runners.

These textiles depict the spiritual water serpent Naga. According to legend, 15 nagas protect the city of Luang Prabang. The creature occupies an important place in the city’s culture and several festivals are held to pay respect for the mighty serpent. While the naga is a pre-Buddhist figure, it is now completely integrated into the Buddhist pantheon.

Stay warm and cosy with these soft, handwoven shawls perfect for anyone who appreciates handmade and sustainable textiles from Laos!

These shawls are made from hand-spun, hand-woven and naturally dyed cotton by Tai Lue weavers in Hongsa District, Xayaboury Province. The colours listed are for both the warp and weft thread; white-white is a consistent coloured textile, whereas black-white has black warp threads with white woven through it, creating a subtle pattern.

Producing cotton thread is a labour-intensive process, involving a variety of tools to clean, spin, and treat the yarn, before being set up on a loom and woven.
