At the TAEC Museum we offer a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages to learn more about the ethnic diversity found in Laos. Choose from a guided tour, seminar or ethnic handicraft workshop! Most of our activities require booking in advance. All tours are available in English, Lao and French (with prior reservation).

Guided Tour of TAEC Museum Every Friday at 3 PM

Join this free 30-minute tour with your regular admission. Tours are presented in English or French.

Guided Tour

Led by a trained museum guide, this 30-minute tour of the exhibitions at TAEC will provide additional insight into Laos' ethnic cultures, their traditions, and customs. This is a chance to learn more about Laos' diverse ethnic groups, and ask questions about life in rural Laos.

Director's Tour

Led by one of TAEC's Directors, this 30-minute tour provides insight into Laos' ethnic cultures, their traditions, and customs. Tours are led by either Thongkhoun Soutthivilay, a Luang Prabang-native, who worked for the National Museum for 10 years or Tara Gujadhur, an American who has worked in Luang Prabang for over 10 years, with a background in anthropology and sustainable tourism development.

Hmong Embroidery

See the museum, enjoy a local drink, and learn how to make Hmong Embroidery from a Hmong artisan!
A TAEC staff member will provide translation into English.

Katu Backstrap Weaving

Get ready for a unique workshop! Learn how to wear, use and create a beaded woven handicraft on a backstrap loom. Enjoy a tour of the museum, a local drink, and learn more about the Katu people and their weaving methods from a TAEC staff member.

Make your own taleo and bamboo gift basket! See the museum, enjoy a local drink, and learn about the Kmhmu culture and bamboo weaving from a TAEC staff member. Presented in English.

Sample ethnic food at the TAEC Café prepared by L’Elephant Restaurant. Vegetarian options are available. Please contact us for the ethnic lunch menu bookings@taeclaos.org. Lunch must be booked 48 hours in advance.

Activities for Kids

Children under the age of 12 receive free entry to the museum.

The TAEC Activity Centre provides an outlet for hands-on learning the whole family. The space offers an alternative and fun way to understand and experience cultural diversity and handicrafts. The area is comfortably arranged with floor pillows, low tables, and plenty of activities to keep little ones entertained.

Seminars & Talks

These one-hour presentations and question-and-answer sessions provide a more in-depth look at Laos. Seminars conducted by advanced booking only. bookings@taeclaos.org.

"Ethnic Diversity and Cultural Change in Laos" (1 hour, maximum 30 people)

This fascinating 60-minute presentation and question-and-answer session gives background on Laos' ethnic communities, their history, and their cultural practices, including livelihoods and crafts. Guests have an opportunity to learn about lifestyles in ethnic villages, and are shown unique artefacts from TAEC's collection that are not accessible to the general public. The seminars are led by one of the two TAEC Directors, either Thongkhoun Soutthivilay, a Luang Prabang-native who worked at the Luang Prabang National Museum for 10 years, and who has attended trainings and conferences in the US, Thailand, Netherlands, Japan, and Brunei, or Tara Gujadhur, an American who has worked in Luang Prabang for over 12 years, with a background in anthropology and sustainable tourism.

"A Guide to Buying Ethnic Handicrafts in Luang Prabang" (1 hour, maximum 6 people)

Nowadays, the influx of imports to the Luang Prabang night market and other shops can be confusing for visitors – this 60-minute experience is led by one of TAEC’s senior staff members, and leads the guests through an overview of the ethnic diversity and traditional handicrafts of Laos, before helping them identify the differences between handmade and factory-made products by touching and examining real examples. This is an enjoyable way to learn about Laos' ethnic groups and as a preparation for shopping around Luang Prabang.

Insight into the Luang Prabang Night Market (1 hour, maximum 6 people)

This talk, led by Mr. Ton Souvannalith, provides a fascinating look at the lives of the sellers of the famed Luang Prabang Night Market, the history of the market, and the challenges that handicraft producers and sellers are now undergoing. Ton is TAEC’s Collections Manager, and has conducted research into the night market, and presented those findings, at the Lao Studies Conference in 2016.
